Captain Paul’s Fishing Edge of GPS Waypoints

The CAPTAIN PAUL’S EDGE program is a very unique ELECTRONIC program that can be downloaded directly into various GPS units from that manufacturer’s Mapping or Data management Program or via several of MyTopo and Maptech’s mapping software programs. Each of the CAPTAIN PAUL’S FISHING EDGE files are delivered via email as an attachment.

This technology saves countless hours of having to manually enter each separate waypoint value into a GPS receiver.

Captain Paul has selected some of his 30,000 different waypoints and bundled them together into favorite areas. These EDGE programs are offered and named for various MAJOR fishing and hunting areas in the State.

The Programs are called, “CAPTAIN PAUL’S FISHING EDGE,” because Captain Paul believes that they will give the fisher, hunter and traveler an advantage in getting to, finding fishing spots, moving around, and getting back from some of the more favorite fishing areas in the state. He believes that the program will save you time, gas and money, by allowing you to “GO TO” these GPS Positions.

The EDGE program attachments consist of a WAYPOINT DATA FILE, specifically designed for most consumer GPS systems. It includes those systems by GARMIN – LOWRANCE, Lowrance Endrua – MAGELLAN, Magellan Triton, RayMarine, Humminbird, Delorme, Google Earth, Maptech Chart Navigator, My Topo Terrain Navigator and other systems that use a GPX date file format. These Edge files are NOT interchangeable as each manufacturer requires a different protocol for transferring the Routes, Tracks and Waypoint data.

The Edge also includes a SPREAD SHEET data file, in Microsoft Excel format that contains the waypoint name, description or “how to fish” the position and of course the LATITUDE and LONGITUDE of the position along with a Map of the General area of the waypoints with a description of the locations as an Acrobat PDF file. The Map file cannot be loaded into the GPS unit and should NOT be used for navigation purposes. It is suggested that these files be printed on paper and carried with the user as a backup for the prime navigation tool.

Using the manufacturer’s data transfer program, allows the user to load the over 100 odd waypoints from a CAPTAIN PAUL’S FISHING EDGE file in less than three minutes from the time you view the email file to the time that they are loaded in the GPS receiver.

To download The CAPTAIN PAUL’S FISHING EDGE program(s) in your GPS, you MUST have FIVE items.

FIRST, a GPS Receiver that can accept downloads either by a removal memory card or a connecting cable that allows the unit to be connected to a computer; SECOND, that GPS manufacturers Mapping Program, Waypoint Manager, or Data Transfer program software; THIRD, a Computer with a connecting cable to the GPS unit or data card; FOURTH, a valid E-Mail Address that accepts attachments, and FIFTH, the CAPTAIN PAUL’S FISHING EDGE FILE of your choice.

The Captain Paul’ Fishing Edge of GPS Waypoints™ programs are designed as an AID TO YOUR NAVIGATION and FISHING. The CAPTAIN PAUL'S FISHING EDGE of GPS WAYPOINTS™ data is to be used ONLY as a reference. The waypoints are NOT to be used for NAVIGATION or as a stand alone navigation instrument.

Whenever using your GPS with these waypoints, you should combine the GPS information with a reliable compass, a current Official map or chart of the area and most important COMMON SENSE. You should use the utmost caution when navigating to these waypoint positions. Remember that some GPS units can only determine a position to within 15 meters and a national emergency may cause GPS readings to have even greater inaccuracies. And, a GPS unit will normally indicate a “GOTO” course as a straight line course that may not actually be practicable to navigate.

The U.S. Department of Commerce states that without the intentional errors of “Selective Availability” civilian GPS accuracy should be within a 20 meter (65.6 ft.) radius of a true position 98% of the time. You may often achieve better, but you should always assume that there may possibly be a 65.6 foot error in your GPS receiver’s readings. You should always have a reliable compass and a map of the area you are navigating. You should not rely on any single navigation tool. All have weaknesses. Always have a backup.

Although great care has been given to provide accurate and properly placed positions, you must be aware that the Louisiana marsh is a living and moving estuary and as such it is constantly changing. The ever changing characteristics of the topography may cause some of the positions to be unsafe to approach during certain tides, with certain winds and other weather conditions. Some of the “EDGE” positions may now be just an underwater reef or shoal, and some are positions that may actually be on land as a road intersection or light house or other landmark. It may not now even be safe to reach these positions in any manner by a boat.

In no way is the program intended to be a guarantee that you will catch fish at the designated locations. The positions are presented only as a GENERAL GUIDE. Weather, tides, water movements, water levels, seasons and times of the year and day, natural available food and cover and lunar phases all have an effect on fishing these locations.

Some of the positions listed may be on PRIVATE or within GATED locations; it is your responsibility when navigating to and using these positions that consideration be given to the property owner.

When approaching these EDGE locations, you should slow your vessel to the slowest speed needed for making headway and observe your depth finder for changes in the sea bottom. When you arrive at the location you should “see” the bottom characteristics and depth change in your depth finder. This change in the water depth may be the EDGE position.

All positions in the “FISHING EDGE” are stated as DDD,MM.mmm and were determined using WGS 84 datum. Your GPS configuration should be set to these settings when downloading the waypoints into your receiver.
